    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

    • Easy to Make: This dump cake with peaches is really easy to make. Just layer the ingredients in the pot and let the heat do the work.
    • Made with Pantry Staples: This dump cake with peaches uses simple ingredients like cake mix, butter, soda, and canned fruit, so you can make it anytime without needing fancy ingredients.
    • Perfect for Camp or Home: Whether you bake it as a campfire dump cake over coals or in your kitchen oven, it turns out warm and bubbly every time. For another camp-friendly dump cake recipe, be sure to try my pear raspberry dump cake next.
    • Feeds a Crowd: This easy dump cake is great for family dinners, holidays, and camping trips because it serves several people and is easy to scoop straight from the pot.

    Ingredients

Ingredients to make a peach dump cake on a table.
    • Canned Peaches: Use peaches packed in juice; do not drain them. The juice is important because it helps cook the dry cake mix evenly. Love peaches? You’ll want to try my peach clafoutis recipe next.
    • Yellow Cake Mix: A standard boxed yellow cake mix works best for a classic flavor. Break up any large clumps in the bag so you do not end up with dry patches on top.
    • Lemon-Lime Soda: This adds extra moisture and helps create a soft, tender texture. Pour it slowly and evenly over the cake mix so it soaks across the entire surface.
    • Salted Butter: Cube the butter into small pieces so it melts evenly while baking. Spreading it across the top helps the cake mix brown and prevents powdery spots.

See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.

    Variations

    • Cake Mix Swap: Use a white cake mix, butter pecan, or even spice cake mix instead of yellow cake mix to give this dump cake recipe a new, flavorful twist.
    • Berry Blend: Mix in a handful of blueberries or raspberries with the peaches for a fruity variation that adds color and extra flavor.
    • Nutty Crunch: Sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts on top before baking for added texture and a subtle nutty flavor.
    • Mini Dump Cakes: Make individual portions in small ramekins or a muffin tin for easy serving and a fun presentation. Because the portions are smaller, they typically cook faster, so plan on checking them after about 20–30 minutes. They’re done when the top looks golden, and the filling is bubbling around the edges.

How to Make a Peach Dump Cake

This recipe for dump cake with peaches is simple, whether you’re at home or camping. You just layer a few ingredients in a Dutch oven or camp oven and let the heat do the work.

Before preparing, prepare your heat source for cooking. For a camp oven, place about 12 coals under the Dutch oven and enough on the lid to maintain even heat. For a Dutch oven, preheat your oven to 350°F.

    1. Step 1: Prepare and Layer the Peaches: Pour the canned peaches, including the juice, into the camp or Dutch oven.
Cake mix being poured over peaches.
    1. Step 2: Add the Cake Mix: Spread out the peaches into an even layer. Pour the cake mix over the peaches, breaking up any clumps.
Lemon-lime soda being poured over the cake mix.
    1. Step 3: Add Soda and Butter: Slowly pour the lemon-lime soda over the top, then distribute the cubed butter across the surface.
Cinnamon being sprinkled on top of the cake mix.
    1. Step 4: Bake: Sprinkle some cinnamon, cover the oven with the lid, and bake for about 45 minutes, checking for doneness. The top should be golden and set, with the edges bubbling. If needed, bake an additional 10–15 minutes.

    1. Step 5: Serve. Remove from the heat and serve the cake warm straight from the oven or campfire. While camping, it’s the perfect dessert to enjoy after our hearty Dutch Oven lasagna.

    Expert Tips

    • Keep the Layers Intact: Do not mix the peaches, cake mix, and soda. The cake relies on the juices and melted butter to soak through, creating a tender, golden top.
    • Even Butter Distribution: Cut the butter into small cubes and spread it evenly over the cake mix. This prevents dry, powdery spots and helps the top brown evenly.
    • Campfire Heat Management: If baking outdoors, keep slightly more coals on the lid than under the oven and rotate both every 10–15 minutes. This ensures even cooking and prevents burning on the bottom.
    • Check for Doneness: The cake is ready when the edges are bubbling, the top is golden, and there are no dry pockets of cake mix. If needed, add an extra 10–15 minutes of cooking.

    Serving Suggestions

    • While camping, you can serve this dump cake warm after a hearty dinner, like my sausage peppers and rice skillet, for a sweet finish everyone will love.
    • This dessert is perfect for potlucks, family dinners, or holiday meals because it easily feeds a crowd and takes little effort to prepare. Pair it with other easy, sweet treats like raspberry bread and s’mores dip.
    • Make it at home for a quick, comforting weeknight dessert. It’s perfect after a hearty meal like my chicken broccoli casserole, which can be on the table in under 30 minutes.

    Peach Dump Cake Recipe FAQs

Can I make this Dutch oven dump cake ahead of time?

Yes, you can assemble the cake a few hours ahead and keep it covered in the refrigerator until you’re ready to bake. Just bring it to room temperature before placing it in the oven or over the coals.

Do I need to drain the canned peaches when making peach dump cake?

No, the juice from the canned peaches helps the cake mix bake evenly and keeps the dump cake moist and tender.

How do I prevent the bottom of my camping dump cake with peaches from burning in a camp oven?

Place slightly fewer coals under the oven than on the lid, rotate the oven every 10–15 minutes, and consider using a few foil balls or a trivet under the oven to elevate it slightly.

Why is my dump cake with peaches still powdery on top?

This usually happens if the butter isn’t evenly distributed or if the soda isn’t poured evenly over the cake mix. Make sure each spot has some butter to melt over the top for a golden finish.

What's the best way to store and reheat leftover dump cake?

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave in 30-second intervals or warm gently in a camp oven over low heat.
