Ingredients

- Canned Peaches: Use peaches packed in juice; do not drain them. The juice is important because it helps cook the dry cake mix evenly. Love peaches? You’ll want to try my peach clafoutis recipe next.
- Yellow Cake Mix: A standard boxed yellow cake mix works best for a classic flavor. Break up any large clumps in the bag so you do not end up with dry patches on top.
- Lemon-Lime Soda: This adds extra moisture and helps create a soft, tender texture. Pour it slowly and evenly over the cake mix so it soaks across the entire surface.
- Salted Butter: Cube the butter into small pieces so it melts evenly while baking. Spreading it across the top helps the cake mix brown and prevents powdery spots.
See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.
Variations
- Cake Mix Swap: Use a white cake mix, butter pecan, or even spice cake mix instead of yellow cake mix to give this dump cake recipe a new, flavorful twist.
- Berry Blend: Mix in a handful of blueberries or raspberries with the peaches for a fruity variation that adds color and extra flavor.
- Nutty Crunch: Sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts on top before baking for added texture and a subtle nutty flavor.
- Mini Dump Cakes: Make individual portions in small ramekins or a muffin tin for easy serving and a fun presentation. Because the portions are smaller, they typically cook faster, so plan on checking them after about 20–30 minutes. They’re done when the top looks golden, and the filling is bubbling around the edges.
How to Make a Peach Dump Cake
This recipe for dump cake with peaches is simple, whether you’re at home or camping. You just layer a few ingredients in a Dutch oven or camp oven and let the heat do the work.
Before preparing, prepare your heat source for cooking. For a camp oven, place about 12 coals under the Dutch oven and enough on the lid to maintain even heat. For a Dutch oven, preheat your oven to 350°F.

- Step 1: Prepare and Layer the Peaches: Pour the canned peaches, including the juice, into the camp or Dutch oven.

- Step 2: Add the Cake Mix: Spread out the peaches into an even layer. Pour the cake mix over the peaches, breaking up any clumps.

- Step 3: Add Soda and Butter: Slowly pour the lemon-lime soda over the top, then distribute the cubed butter across the surface.

- Step 4: Bake: Sprinkle some cinnamon, cover the oven with the lid, and bake for about 45 minutes, checking for doneness. The top should be golden and set, with the edges bubbling. If needed, bake an additional 10–15 minutes.

- Step 5: Serve. Remove from the heat and serve the cake warm straight from the oven or campfire. While camping, it’s the perfect dessert to enjoy after our hearty Dutch Oven lasagna.
Expert Tips
- Keep the Layers Intact: Do not mix the peaches, cake mix, and soda. The cake relies on the juices and melted butter to soak through, creating a tender, golden top.
- Even Butter Distribution: Cut the butter into small cubes and spread it evenly over the cake mix. This prevents dry, powdery spots and helps the top brown evenly.
- Campfire Heat Management: If baking outdoors, keep slightly more coals on the lid than under the oven and rotate both every 10–15 minutes. This ensures even cooking and prevents burning on the bottom.
- Check for Doneness: The cake is ready when the edges are bubbling, the top is golden, and there are no dry pockets of cake mix. If needed, add an extra 10–15 minutes of cooking.

Peach Dump Cake Recipe FAQs
Yes, you can assemble the cake a few hours ahead and keep it covered in the refrigerator until you’re ready to bake. Just bring it to room temperature before placing it in the oven or over the coals.
No, the juice from the canned peaches helps the cake mix bake evenly and keeps the dump cake moist and tender.
Place slightly fewer coals under the oven than on the lid, rotate the oven every 10–15 minutes, and consider using a few foil balls or a trivet under the oven to elevate it slightly.
This usually happens if the butter isn’t evenly distributed or if the soda isn’t poured evenly over the cake mix. Make sure each spot has some butter to melt over the top for a golden finish.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave in 30-second intervals or warm gently in a camp oven over low heat.

The perfect, easy treat for camping. My family loved it!
Mary says
We made this all the time when my kids were little. I never knew the name of it. We had taken a group of young women into the mountains and one of our leaders made it for us so we just started calling it Bishop's cake after him. The only thing we did differently was adding red hots to the top of the cake. Last time I went to make the cake we had a very hard time finding red hots. We still get requests for it when we have family reunions.

I love making this. Use frozen fruit instead of canned. Any frozen fruit. I think it comes out better. Add a little Mexican vanilla to it and then cinnamon on top to taste.
Dutch Oven Daddy says
Do you add extra liquid? Mexican vanilla is a wonderful addition.
Christian says
I don’t. Just make sure the sprite covers the cake batter completely so you don’t get dry spots with the batter

Can I double the recipe?
Ned Adams says
Absolutely, keep in mind that cooking times will most likely change. Keep an eye on it so that it doesn’t burn.

Can I do it with apples instead of peaches
Ned Adams says
Great question Charles! Absolutely, you can use any fruit that’d you like.
Sue says
Recipe says 12 coals on bottom but doesn’t say how many coals on top....
Ned Adams says
Hi Sue, great question. In step 10 it mentions to, "Place heated coals over the entire lid." Usually what I do is make a ring of coals around the outside of the lid and then a ring inside of that. Let me know if that helps clarify.
Christie Fournier says
made this today with fresh peaches and also added mulberries... after some insight from Ned (Dutch Oven Daddy), i added about an ounce extra Sprite, to make up for missing the yummy syrup from the can...turned out AMAZING!!!!
Ned Adams says
I'm so glad it turned out well for you! Peaches and Mulberries sounds like an amazing combination! Very well done!
Candy says
I have made this all the time without the soda pop. It bashes there too crusty. Why would I need to add it in?
Ned Adams says
Great question Candy! You can choose to add the soda or leave it out. It definitely changes the flavor.
