    What are Totchos?

Totchos have all your favorite nacho toppings but frozen potato tater tots are used instead of tortilla chips. We know everyone loves nachos, but these tater tot nachos are pretty much the ultimate in party food.

Totchos further garnished with guacamole, salsa, and sour cream.

    Recipe ingredients:

Ingredients to make tater tot nachos: black olives, jalapeno, taco seasoning, guacamole, ground beef, cheddar cheese, jack cheese, sour cream, salsa, green onions, and onion.
    • Tater tots —we used and recommend Ore-Ida brand frozen tater tots. We tested these with generic tots before and they just don't hold up.
    • Ground beef — use what fat content you have on hand, but the leaner it is, the less renderings to drain off.
    • Produce — onions for the taco meat, green onions are used in the layers. Jalapeños
    • Taco seasoning — we used Taco Bell brand packet.
    • Cheeses — sharp cheddar and jack cheese are what we used.
    • Toppings — Sour cream, guacamole, black olives, and your favorite salsa.

How to make Tater Tot Nachos

Taco seasoning being added to the cooked ground beef.
    Step 1
A single layer of crispy tater tots in a cast iron skillet.
    Step 2

Step 1 — Bake the tater tots according to package instructions in the oven or use an air fryer for even crispier results. While they are cooking, add the ground beef to a skillet over medium high heat. While as it cooking toss in the diced onion. Once done, drain any renderings and add the taco seasoning, following the package directions. Transfer to a small mixing bowl.

Step 2 — Preheat oven to 350°F, if not already on from making the tots. Once the tater tots are done, add a single layer to a large skillet.

The first layer of totchos has been assembled with the cheeses, seasoned ground beef, green onions, and black olives.
    Step 3
Second layer of tatchos being assembled.
    Step 4

Step 3 — Add a layer of cheese, then the taco meat. Sprinkle the sliced olives and green onions on top.

Step 4 —Add the remaining tater tots and repeat adding cheese, taco meat, olives, and green onions.

Final toppings placed, cheese, black olives, and green onions.
    Step 5
Tater tot nachos baking in the oven.
    Step 6

Step 5— Add a final layer of cheese completely covering the tater tot nachos and the remaining green onion and olives.

Step 6 —Bake for 15 minutes or until the cheese is completely melted. Once done, allow it to rest for a few minutes or until the cheese is no longer molten. Garnish the totchos with sliced jalapeños, green onions, salsa, guacamole, and salsa. Serve immediately.

Freshly baked totchos garnished with green onions and sliced jalapenos.

Adaptations and variations for Tater Tot Nachos

Meat — swap out the ground beef for either ground turkey or ground chicken.

Cheese — pepper Jack, Mexican cheese blend, and even nacho cheese sauce would all work. However, pre-shredded cheese doesn't always melt well and can leave a bit of a funny taste.

Layers — add refried beans, black beans, or pinto beans on top of the meat.

Toppings — The possibilities are endless: diced cherry tomatoes, pickled jalapeños, diced red onions, pico de gallo, fresh cilantro, and a drizzle of fresh squeezed lime juice.

    Recipe FAQs

Can I use homemade taco seasoning instead of a packet?

Absolutely! Start with a tablespoon and a half cup of water, taste and add more if needed.

How long will leftover tater tot nachos last?

Remove any sour cream and guacamole then store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

How do I reheat the leftover totchos?

Reheat by placing in the skillet and back in the oven at 350°F until heated through. Or use the microwave.
