Camp Oven Peach Dump Cake

Why is it called a “dump” cake?

It’s called a dump cake because all ingredients are dumped into a Cast iron Dutch oven, cake pan or slow cooker. This makes a fantastic camp dessert because of the minimal meal prep that may be required for other recipes.

Is a “dump” cake the same as a cobbler?

Dump cakes are different in that they usually are made with a cake mix and a can of soda. Cobblers usually are covered with a crusty topping and a fruit filling.

Hi Sue, great question. In step 10 it mentions to, “Place heated coals over the entire lid.” Usually what I do is make a ring of coals around the outside of the lid and then a ring inside of that. Let me know if that helps clarify.

I love making this. Use frozen fruit instead of canned. Any frozen fruit. I think it comes out better. Add a little Mexican vanilla to it and then cinnamon on top to taste.

We made this all the time when my kids were little. I never knew the name of it. We had taken a group of young women into the mountains and one of our leaders made it for us so we just started calling it Bishop’s cake after him. The only thing we did differently was adding red hots to the top of the cake. Last time I went to make the cake we had a very hard time finding red hots. We still get requests for it when we have family reunions.

So I was hesitant to try this Peach Dump Cake as adding the lemon lime soda was foreign to me. But I am so glad I made the recipe exactly as written because it takes a standard dump cake to a whole new level. The dish was so yummy and simple to make – plus it looked great using my Dutch oven as the serving dish.
