What exactly is a hot dog?

There might not be a more beloved and yet equally controversial food item in the U.S. than the hot dog.

Whether you grew up eating them in a bun, on a piece of white bread, sliced into beans, or macaroni and cheese, hot dogs are about as American as apple pie.

Yet they're not American in origin.

    They're German.

I'll forgo the history lesson for now, but they originated in Frankfurt, Germany, hence frankfurters. Then they migrated to Austria, which in German is Wien, and became the wiener.

Pretty much every cuisine now has a form of tubular meat, and personally, I couldn't be more grateful. I mean, who doesn't love finely minced meat with spices rolled into a thick tube shape stick?

A hot dog can be made from beef, pork, chicken, lamb, or any other meat or combination thereof. Unless you're buying high end dogs, they tend to be the trimmings.

But I don't want to delve too far into the world of hot dog making because I enjoy eating them far too much.

How to make a chili cheese dog skillet bake dinner?

Ingredients to make this recipe: Hot dogs, chili, canned biscuits, green onions, butter, garlic, and cheddar cheese along with a cast iron skillet.

If you're like me, from time to time you need a quick and easy dinner that everyone will love. And what I mean by everyone will love is the other half will not grumble and the kids won't fight you on eating.

Because we both know those times are precious.

This is that meal, and then some. Because hot dogs, chili, cheese, and garlicky bread...GOOOOODDDDDD! It will be all hearts and smiles at the dining room table.

Chili in a stainless steel bowl

Add either canned or homemade chili like my Awesome Chili to a large bowl.

Sliced hot dogs and green onions have been added to the chili in a stainless steel bowl.

Stir the sliced hot dogs and green onions into the chili. This will serve as the base layer of this delicious Chili Cheese Dog Skillet Bake.

Sharp cheddar cheese covers the chili dog mixture in a cast iron skillet.

Once the chili dog mixture has been added to the cast iron skillet, cover it completely with your favorite cheddar cheese. We used sharp because I love that tang, but any will do.

Canned biscuits tossed with melted butter, granulated garlic, and dried parsley in a stainless steel bowl.

The aim of this dinner is quick and easy, so I used canned biscuits. But you're more than welcome to whip up your own homemade version. The important thing here is to douse it all in melted butter, garlic, and parsley.

You can make the cubes as large or as small as you like. We've found the smaller they're cut, the quicker it all cooks.

Toss it all in the oven and bake. Once the biscuits are cooked (i.e. no longer doughy) remove it from the oven.

Freshly baked Chili Cheese Dog Bake from the oven.

Remove it from the oven once the biscuits have cooked through and have become golden brown. Allow it to rest for 5 or so minutes before serving. Then enjoy.

This was the best recipe I found on the net!... Perfect!!... I tweaked by adding a drizzle of catsup and mustard before adding the cheese. The butter/garlic over the biscuits is a great touch... I also used 10 hot dogs and used one can of Armour hot dog sauce and one can of no bean chili.

Absolutely, the only difference would be making it in a camp oven. Coals on bottom and top, the cooking time would vary but this would work great! Hope that helps?!
